Seattle Central College is a public university in Seattle, Washington. It is one of three colleges that make up the Seattle University District. The college has a large international student population, served by the Department of International Education Programs as well as the many immigrant and refugee students who take ESL courses through the Department of Basic and Transitional Studies. Seattle Central also includes the Wood Construction Center and the Seattle Maritime Academy, which are located on separate campuses to accommodate the very specific tools and work areas needed. Seattle Central's origins can be traced back to 1902, when Broadway High School was founded. It remained a traditional high school until the end of World War II, when it was converted into a vocational and adult education institution for the benefit of veterans who wanted to complete high school. As a result, in 1946, all of its high school students were transferred to Lincoln High School, and the Edison Technical School (which already shared a campus with Broadway High School) was expanded into an entire facility. Edison began offering college courses when it was reorganized as Seattle Community College in September 1966 North Seattle Community College and South Seattle Community College opened its doors in 1970, followed by a name change from Seattle Community College to Seattle Central Community College.<\/p>\n
