How SheerID verifies that you are a college student

In the United States, there is a "non-profit organization" called the National Student Clearinghouse, which has information on the enrolment of all students attending most universities in the United States. They have a product called Verification Services, which allows third parties to verify the enrolment of these students.

The Exchange (as they like to call themselves) is made up of universities. The universities are members of their boards of directors. Essentially, these universities "own" the clearinghouses. Originally, they were set up so that universities could exchange student transcripts. When students moved from one university to another, they had to send in their transcripts. In the 1970s, this was a complicated process. Each university sent transcripts to all other universities. It was also easy to falsify your transcripts. So, they created the Ticket Clearinghouse. Colleges send their enrollment information to the clearinghouse. Whenever that college needs transcript enrollment verification, all it has to do is ask the clearinghouse and get it for free. It turned out to be cheaper to have the Ticket Clearinghouse do this because it was just one big database.

How the validation process works

sheerid customers (brands offering discounts) determine who is eligible for the promotion. Then, sheerid creates a form where you can enter only the information that confirms your eligibility. Once the information is submitted, it is compared to selected authoritative data sources without making the data visible to anyone. We immediately confirm that a match exists and return either a "yes" (which triggers delivery of the reward) or a "no" (which indicates that you do not qualify or that you need to provide more information).

If asked, what kind of files should I upload?

You will need to upload a document issued by your school that shows your name, school name, shows the date of current enrollment

Please note that we will review the date of enrollment, not the date printed or viewed. For example, your transcript may have been printed yesterday, but it indicates that your most recent class was last semester. Future terms are also not accepted, so an acceptance letter does not prove current enrollment.

What happens if I can't prove I'm a student?

This is extremely rare. Academic institutions provide official documentation that we can accept in many forms, but if you cannot provide us with any acceptable proof of current enrollment, we will not be able to approve your proposal. But to repeat, if you are attending school, you should have access to documents that we can verify.

If your school is not on the list, then you do not currently qualify. To make sure you have not missed a school in the list, please enter the full name of the school.
